Treating cats with Hyperthyroidism for over 30 years

What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is a common disease caused by increased production of thyroid hormone (T4) from an overactive gland in the cat’s neck. Overproduction of thyroid hormone leads to an increase in the cat’s overall metabolism, resulting in weight loss, changes in appetite, and adverse effects on the heart, kidneys, and other organs. Although the cause of feline hyperthyroidism is not known, possible contributing factors include genetic tendencies, certain compounds in the diet, and exposure to thyroid-disrupting chemicals in the environment.

Treatment of Hyperthyroidism
Currently, veterinarians recommend one of three options for treatment of hyperthyroidism: radioactive iodine therapy, methimazole (a twice daily medication), or feeding of a prescription diet that is severely restricted in iodine. Radioactive iodine therapy is the only one of these options that cures hyperthyroidism, and is widely regarded as the “gold standard” treatment of this disease.
